Obasanjo should apologize to traditional leaders

The Chairman of the Ondo State People’s Democratic Party, Olumide Akinrinlola, has condemned former President Olusegun Obasanjo for allegedly insulting some monarchs of Oyo State. The viral video byshows Obasanjo ordering the traditional rulers of Oyo State to stand and salute the state governor, Seyi Makinde during the inauguration of the project in Iseyin on Friday.

The Ondo PDP leader in his statement on Saturday said Obasanjo ordered the royal fathers to stand and also reprimanded them for not showing up when the governor entered the arena. According to him, it was necessary for the former president to write a letter of apology to the traditional rulers.

He said: “With all due respect to the elder statesman, father and former president of our country, I regret to say that this is an excessive insult.”In fact, traditional thrones are sacred and predate any president, governor, or other human being.«Traditional institutions enjoy respect around the world.

The respect we give our monarchs is for the throne/seats they occupy, not the owner. Once the king is installed, he becomes the eldest in the land and the father of all. Not because of his age, but because he occupies a throne older than any other man or governmental institution." Akinrinlola insisted that Obasanjo was wrong, noting that “a governor or president does not make one older or greater than royal fathers who are symbols of their communities.

”We cannot continue to defame our royal fathers in the name of political positions. Can Baba (Obasanjo) order the Oba of Benin to defend him in this way? Again, going too far is an insult.

Baba OBJ should apologize to the entire Yoruba race. "Meanwhile, pan-Yoruba social political organization Afenifere said the issue would be discussed by the group at its next meeting. Speaking to our correspondent on Sunday, the group’s National Organizing Secretary, Kole  Omololu, said the matter had been reported to the association’s National Head,

Pa Reuben Fasoranti.Omololu said: “Papa (Fasoranti) and the national leaders will deliberate and share their views with the world at the Afenifere General Assembly on September 27.” »
