Just in: African Union suspends Gabon: Coup:
The African Union (AU) has suspended Gabon's membership following a coup in the Central African country.
The African Union Peace and Security Council said Thursday evening that it condemned in the strongest possible terms the military seizure of power in Gabon that led to the overthrow of President Ali Bongo. Gabon was "suspended with immediate effect from all activities of the AU and its institutions until constitutional order is restored in the country".
AU suspended the Republic of Niger's membership a few weeks ago after the military took power in late July. In Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Sudan, too, , people were suspended after coup attempts in these countries.
In Brussels, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, declared that the European Union "rejects any violent seizure of power in Gabon". "The challenges facing Gabon must be resolved in accordance with the principles of the rule of law, constitutional order and democracy," Borrell said in a statement on Thursday.
"The peace and prosperity of the country and regional stability depend on it," the statement said. He called for an "inclusive and substantive dialogue" instead of enforcing respect for the rule of law, human rights and the will of the Gabonese people.
