Flooding in Cameroon dam will hit states in seven days - FG

The federal government on Monday said all frontline states on the Bénoué River could experience flooding in the next seven days due to the opening of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, organized at the request of the Presidential Commission established by President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Humanities and Poverty Alleviation Dr Betta Edu said the new commission will Undertake a variety of rescue policies and missions to mitigate the impact of the crisis. She called on the Nigeria Governors Forum to step up action to ensure the immediate evacuation of Nigerians from flood-prone communities to safer destinations. “This coordination meeting was organized at the request of President Bola Tinubu, who chaired it after I raised the issue of flooding at today's Federal Executive Council meeting,” she said. The President ordered the relevant ministries to meet to find solutions to the flood problem.

“As mentioned, the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon was recently inaugurated and we will see the results in the next few days. Flooding is a serious problem in Nigeria causing loss of life and property. We have been mandated by the President to ensure adequate preparation for the consequences of the opening of the Lagdo Dam. “One of the things that state governments need to start doing is make sure the wastewater is treated. Blockages must be removed.Appropriate public awareness should also be raised.

People in the affected areas must start switching to safer planes. States must resist forced resettlement. It is unthinkable to witness an avoidable loss of life and property. Environment Minister Iziaq Salako and Water and Sanitation Minister Prof Joseph Utsev met with the Minister for Humanitarian Aid during the briefing and pledged to step up their efforts against the devastating effects of the floods.

The Lagos State Police Command has officially affirmed the apprehension of renowned Lagos socialite Sam Larry, whose real name is Balogun Eletu.  This arrest is part of an ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragic passing of the late singer, Mohbad, also known as Ilerioluwa Aloba.
